A senior official at SAIC Group said that MG Automotive India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of China’s SAIC Group, said on March 11 that it plans to launch the upcoming SUV Cars from select cities.
The company plans to launch two models, the Latest SUV Cars and the all-electric SUV, within the next nine months, and the company announced that its vehicles in the country will use over-the-air (OTA) technology.
“We will launch a pure latest electric cars in the fourth quarter of this year (October to December),” said Gaurav Gupta, chief commercial officer of MG Motor India. “It will be launched in some specific cities across the country.”
He did not disclose details of the location, but said the vehicle could travel more than 250 kilometers on a single charge.
The company’s first model has been named Hector and is scheduled to launch in the June quarter of this year. MG Motors has begun trial production of the vehicle at its manufacturing facility in Harar, Gujarat.
Gupta said that apart from Tesla, MG Motors India is the only company with OTA technology.
He added: “We will use the OTA feature in cars. India does not currently have this feature. This has the potential to revolutionize mobility.”
He added that OTA technology allows automakers to update their operating systems in vehicles, thereby helping to refresh content, including entertainment.
OTA is a standard for transmitting and receiving application-related information in wireless communication systems.
MG Motor India plans to launch a product in India every year starting in 2019.
